🌊 The Kayaker Who Took ‘Whale Watching’ a Bit Too Literally 🌊

PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE – When 24-year-old Adrián Simancas set out for a serene kayaking trip with his father, Dell, he probably didn’t expect to get up close and personal with a humpback whale’s tonsils.

🐋 An Unplanned Whale of a Time

Paddling near the San Isidro lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan, Adrián was enjoying the crisp air and gentle waves. But nature had other plans. A 50-foot, 50,000-pound humpback whale breached the surface and, mistaking Adrián’s yellow inflatable kayak for
well, who knows what, decided to sample this new “delicacy.” In a gulp, Adrián found himself inside the whale’s mouth.

“I Thought I Was Dead”

Inside the whale, Adrián described a slimy texture and a sudden plunge into darkness. “I thought I was dead,” he recounted. Meanwhile, Dell, capturing the entire episode on camera, was probably reconsidering their choice of vacation activities.

Spit Happens

Fortunately for Adrián, humpback whales aren’t fans of human cuisine. The whale quickly spat him and his kayak back into the ocean, leaving Adrián wet, shaken, but miraculously unharmed. Dell’s footage shows the dramatic moment, likely making it the most intense home video in the family collection.

A Whale of a Tale

Despite the ordeal, both father and son are eager to return to the water, perhaps with a bit more distance from marine giants. Adrián’s experience serves as a reminder that while whale encounters are rare, it’s best to admire these majestic creatures from afar.

Buddy’s Take: “Note to self: When kayaking in whale territory, maybe don’t dress like a giant plankton. Just saying.”
