PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE â When 24-year-old AdriĂĄn Simancas set out for a serene kayaking trip with his father, Dell, he probably didnât expect to get up close and personal with a humpback whaleâs tonsils.
đ An Unplanned Whale of a Time
Paddling near the San Isidro lighthouse in the Strait of Magellan, AdriĂĄn was enjoying the crisp air and gentle waves. But nature had other plans. A 50-foot, 50,000-pound humpback whale breached the surface and, mistaking AdriĂĄnâs yellow inflatable kayak for⊠well, who knows what, decided to sample this new âdelicacy.â In a gulp, AdriĂĄn found himself inside the whaleâs mouth.
âI Thought I Was Deadâ
Inside the whale, AdriĂĄn described a slimy texture and a sudden plunge into darkness. âI thought I was dead,â he recounted. Meanwhile, Dell, capturing the entire episode on camera, was probably reconsidering their choice of vacation activities.
Spit Happens
Fortunately for AdriĂĄn, humpback whales arenât fans of human cuisine. The whale quickly spat him and his kayak back into the ocean, leaving AdriĂĄn wet, shaken, but miraculously unharmed. Dellâs footage shows the dramatic moment, likely making it the most intense home video in the family collection.
A Whale of a Tale
Despite the ordeal, both father and son are eager to return to the water, perhaps with a bit more distance from marine giants. AdriĂĄnâs experience serves as a reminder that while whale encounters are rare, itâs best to admire these majestic creatures from afar.
Buddyâs Take: âNote to self: When kayaking in whale territory, maybe donât dress like a giant plankton. Just saying.â
