Hold onto your whiskers, folks, because this story is the catâs pajamas! Meet Mittens, a fluffy, majestic Maine coon from Christchurch, New Zealand, who recently embarked on an unintentional adventure across the Tasman Seaâproving once and for all that cats truly do have nine lives (and apparently frequent flyer miles, too).
What was supposed to be a simple one-way trip to Melbourne, Australia, turned into a whirlwind three-flight, 24-hour international sagaâall thanks to a purrplexing airport mix-up that left her human, Margo Neas, frantically searching for her jet-setting feline.
đ± The Furry Flight Fiasco
Margo and Mittens were all set to start their new life in Melbourne, boarding an Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch. Mittens, safely secured in her pet carrier, was checked in as cargoâa standard practice for traveling pets. The plan? Mittens would land in Melbourne, be safely unloaded, and reunite with Margo at the airport.
But, as anyone whoâs ever traveled knows, things donât always go according to plan.
Upon landing, Margo eagerly waited for her feline companion at the designated collection area. Minutes turned into hours, and stillâno sign of Mittens. Growing anxious, Margo inquired with airline staff, who assured her they were looking into the delay.
Thatâs when she received a call that left her absolutely stunned. Mittens had been accidentally sent back to New Zealand. đ±âïž
Yes, you read that correctly. Instead of stepping paw onto Australian soil, Mittens was inadvertently placed back on a flight to Christchurch. But waitâit gets better.
đ« Wait, Whereâs the Cat Now?!
Somehow, in the midst of airline logistics, Mittensâ carrier was overlooked on the tarmac, possibly hidden behind a wheelchair, and wasnât unloaded in Melbourne. Instead, she was put back on a return flight to Christchurchâwithout her owner even knowing.
By the time Margo discovered this feline flight fiasco, Mittens had already landed back in New Zealand.
But before Margo could even start making arrangements to retrieve her, Mittens was put on another planeâthis time heading BACK to Melbourne!
Thatâs right, this cat took THREE flights in 24 hours before finally making it to her rightful destination. We can only imagine her confusion as she peeked out of her carrier, wondering why she kept ending up in the same place.
đŸ Reunited and It Feels So Good
After a whirlwind of airport calls, frantic tracking, and a few too many air miles, Mittens was finally handed over to Jetpets, a professional pet transportation service, who ensured she safely arrived in Melbourne.
By the time Margo was finally reunited with her adventurous kitty, Mittens was exhausted but unharmedâthough weâre betting she had a few strong words (or meows) to share about her unexpected journey.
As for Air New Zealand, they took full responsibility for the mishap, covered all costs associated with Mittensâ around-the-world adventure, and issued a formal apology to Margo for the ordeal.
Margo, for her part, was just relieved to have her furry co-pilot back where she belongedâon solid ground and far, far away from another departure gate.
âïž The Aftermath: Will Mittens Ever Fly Again?
Now happily settled in her new Australian home, Mittens has been enjoying a much-needed break from international travel. No more airport layovers, no more unexpected detoursâjust cozy cat naps in a sunny Melbourne window.
And as for whether sheâll ever step paw onto a plane again? Margo says, âAbsolutely not.â Mittens, it seems, has retired from the world of high-flying adventures.
Weâll just have to hope she doesnât try to sneak into another suitcase anytime soon.
